The 2D Dolphins have been busy...per usual!  Here's the latest:

We...

  • are awesome Word Study spellers! We read our words, defined our words, sorted our words into spelling categories and played spelling games.
  • continue to work through chapter 3 in math: subtraction!
  • took our first 36-problem fact assessments.  We will keep track of our progress as the year moves forward!
  • began our study of maps and map keys in our Maps, Graphs, & Globes book.
  • listened to "Story Hour: Starring Megan" and answered questions together about the story.  
  • learned about "M.I.N.T.S." and how this acronym will help us remember what words get capitalized in our writing.
  • chanted our "Tally Chant" to help us remember when to cross our tallies.
  • learned the "Word[s] of the Week": ponder and wallop.
  • met many interesting people in the CA community as we toured the school on Friday: Mr. Facciola, Mr. MacKenzie, Mr. Ray, Ms. Broh, Ms. Long, Mr. Mele, Mrs. Nockowitz, Mrs. Killoren, and our very own 2D parent, Ms. Seymore!  
  • ate lunch in the courtyard near the dining hall.
  • started reading three plays about school situations...more to come on this soon!
  • chose our "Clock Partners."
  • had our second drama class of the year.
  • wrote letters to send to New York fire fighters, police officers & other first responders after discussing 9/11 in the classroom.  We sent our letters to Zarak's former neighborhood firehouse and police station!
  • started reading George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl.  
  • finished reading several Second Grade CARES books including The Hungry Otter  and Chesnut Cove.

Week 3

Here are highlights from Week 3 in second grade:

We...
  • Learned to estimate by using a group of ten as a "reference number"
  • Listened to The Library, a story from our Open Court basal reader
  • Illustrated our covers for our Writing Binders
  • Are learning how to go back in a story to find an answer
  • Are learning how to write a written comprehension answer in a complete sentence & using the question to help
  • Began writing in our D'Nealian handwriting books
    • Do you remember the chant that helps us perfect our writing?  
      • One, two, look at you!
      • Three, four, feet on the floor!
      • Five, six, pick up sticks!
      • Seven, eight, backs straight!
      • Nine, ten, books at a slant and LET'S BEGIN!
  • Wrote our D'Nealian letters in the air and with modeling clay
  • Took more than one spelling test
  • Started a Daily Word Ladder packet
  • Created a 2-part web to help us draft paragraphs about ourselves
  • Shared adjectives that described us
  • Learned a new "Word of the Week": Immerse
  • Practiced crossing "the midline" of our bodies with some brain-stimulating moves
  • Listened to a read aloud, King of the Playground
  • Continued listening to Gooney Bird Greene
  • Practiced "Indoor Recess" where we tried out classroom games and art supplies
Who knew second graders could do so much?!

Absolutely Fabulous Class 2D!

We are off to a fantastic start in class 2D.  We have earned 17 marbles in the first 7 days of school!  Wow!  Only 87 more until we celebrate our excellent behavior!

The 2D Dolphins have been working hard from Day 1.  In the past seven days we have:

  • Come up with classroom rules
  • Wrote our hopes and dreams for second grade
  • Went on a classroom treasure hunt
  • Created new words from the letters in the words "SECOND GRADE"
  • Drawn comic strips of "Six Things I Didn't Do This Summer"  
  • Measured our heights and our hands
  • Shared our "Me In A Bag" treasures
  • Learned about our teachers when they were "Stars of the 'Day'"
  • Estimated with Unifix cubes
  • Worked on pages for our second grade portfolio
  • Learned about the five ways to study geography:  Location, Place, Human/Environment Interaction, Movement, Regions
  • Drawn our self-portraits
  • Listened to Come Back, Jack! on CD
  • Took a giant spelling test
  • Learned how to pick a "Good Fit" book using the "Five Finger Rule"
  • Helped label classroom books
  • Read a few comprehension paragraphs and carefully answered some questions about them
  • Wrote a friendly letter to some people we love
  • Danced in morning meeting
  • Learned about our "Word of the Week" (STRIVE)
  • Wrote and illustrated a special "Guess Who?" poster for our visiting loved ones at Parents' Night
  • Read lots of read aloud books together including Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry 
What will the next seven days bring?!  We can't wait to see!

Welcome to our class blog! 
The 2012-2013 school year begins in less than a week.  Until then we hope you are enjoying your final days of summer!
