Tuesday, December

The 2D Rocks are wonderful writers! We wrote a fantastic paragraph on the Sioux together today. Modeling a topic sentence and working together to add supporting and detail sentences has helped the Rocks organize their writing when working independently.

Place value in Chapter 5 went swimmingly for all. We are digit-masters! We are continuing to discuss reasonable answers and elimination of unreasonable choices when solving problems. We have also discussed what information is given to us by different types of numbers: counting, order, measurement, time, etc.

Daily 5 is still a favorite each day. The 2D Rocks love reading and writing independently as well as partner reading during our Daily 5 time. Their fluency is greatly improving with our partner and choral readings. Parts 4 and 5 of Daily 5 will be added to our literacy block in January. They include "Word Work" and "Listen to Reading."

And we're off (and running)! The last week of school is here! Today we read some fantastic Patricia Polacco books in our reading groups and as a read aloud in the afternoon. We began chapter 5 in math-place value. We also added to our Native American Changes book and even had time to put together a few U.S. and continent puzzles at the end of the day!

Today we enjoyed 2 giant cookie cakes courtesy of Mark and family! Thanks for the birthday treat, Mark. We also started our new reading group books, Just Plain Fancy and Chicken Sunday. We have new spelling words for the week. Next week we will not have a regular spelling list, but will have special spelling list for the last four day of school before break.

Today we continued our reading of Patricia Polacco books. Our read aloud book today was Firetalking. This book is an autobiography of Patricia Polacco's life. We also read Chicken Sunday and Just Plain Fancy in our reading groups. In math we reviewed ordered pairs and fair/unfair outcomes. We also enjoyed a perfect Spanish class, a very productive Swimming class, and a fun Drama class today.

The Last Day of November! Where does the time go?! Today we received our new spelling lists. Please note a copy of our lists for parents is now coming home. The 2D Rocks finished some independent work such as final drafts in writing and a memory page on our Native American Day. We also continued working on our Native American Changes books. In the afternoon, we worked on Marcy Cook tiles in math and finished up some work on ordered pairs. We also listened to group presentations on dioramas made during our Native American Day.
