Week Number 2

Two days in to week number 2! Before you know it, we'll be talking pumpkins and campfires, but for now, let's bask in the excitement of a new school year! The 2D Stars, as we are officially called now, accomplished many things today including writing and illustrating a comic strip, extending their learning about greater than and less than symbols, and attending three Specials: P.E., Computer, and Science.

The Stars are listening to a book called, Gooney Bird Greene, about an unusual classmate who loves to tell interesting stories. We are also working on learning things about one another such as our birthdays, favorite ice cream flavors and favorite foods. Today, our Morning Meeting Monitor chose a daily joke to tell the class and read the definition for our Word of the Week, strive. We learned that we are all working hard, or striving, to be good at many things including reading, math, and being a good friend.

We have started reading our Open Court stories this week. We've begun the year with The Library, a tale of a young girl who absolutely adores books. In addition to Open Court, we have introduced our Daily Language Review or DLR. This brief look at grammar occurs each day as students enter the classroom in the morning. Independently, students answer 5 questions about various facets of grammar. As a class, we discuss and grade our answers and follow up by graphing our progress. Finally, The Daily Five is a highlight of our day. Already experts, the Stars are reading independently during this time and will learn the other 4 parts of Daily Five, a framework for literacy, as the school year progresses.

Three Days In...

The First Day of School!

Congratulations! We made it! Second grade is off to an outstanding start! The 2D classroom is filled with polite and respectful listeners, thoughtful and independent thinkers and all-around marvelous kids! It's going to be a wonderful year! Give yourself a pat on the back! Welcome Second Graders!

Welcome to class 2D! It's going to be a fantastic year together! We are looking forward to seeing you at the Ice Cream Social from 5:30 to 7 on Monday, August 23. Remember you are welcome to come between 5 and 5:30 if you are new to Academy. The Ice Cream Social is where you will receive your name tag for the carpool line, can buy Academy spirit wear AND get to meet Mrs. Reckner and me! The first day of school will be here before we know it so enjoy the end of your summer and I'll see you next week!
