Welcome Back to School!

Svetlana and Vera Anderson present Ukranian traditions which closely link to our author study on Patricia Polacco who writes of her Russian-Jewish and Irish heritage.

Last week we enjoyed starting our Patricia Polacco author study. Ms. Polacco has written and illustrated many books about family relationships, traditions, and heritage. We red aloud Thank You, Mr. Falker, a moving story about Patricia's own struggle with reading and the teacher who finally helped her overcome this challenge. Mrs. Katz and Tush is a story about a boy and his lonely neighbor who become lifelong friends. As a grade, students will be making connections to stories they read independently through a BINGO game format. Students have also begun Book Clubs on Mrs. Mack and My Rotten Red-headed Brother. Half the class will read, discuss and respond to questions on one of the above books and then switch groups to do the same with the other. We will continue to rotate through a total of seven books during the next few weeks.
